The quick version
Swings are one of the newer sights around Ubud. Long ropes hang from a frame or a tall tree on the edge of a valley, a staff member straps you into a harness, and a push sends you out over the palms and terraces and back. Indonesia Travel describes the Ubud swing simply as a way to fly up in the air with the green landscape behind you for a holiday picture.1
That is an honest description. The swings are made for photographs: long flowing dresses, a nest-shaped seat on the ridge, a heart-shaped frame, and staff who know where to stand for the shot. Parks often bundle the swing with other things to do on the same slope, such as ziplines, sky bikes and photo platforms. Some offer outfits to borrow for the photo, which explains the bright dresses you see in every feed.
They are not an old Balinese tradition, and they are not a thrill ride in the theme-park sense. Expect a few gentle arcs at height, a view that is genuinely beautiful, and a lot of waiting while others take their turn. Whether that is worth a morning depends on how much you want the photo. For some travelers it is the photo of the trip; for others it is a queue with a view.

The swing park sold on this page sits above the rice terraces in Payangan, west of Ubud, and combines a swing, a zipline and a sky bike. A visit takes 2 to 4 hours, and it is open from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM without fixed time slots, so you arrive when it suits you. That makes it easy to fit around a late breakfast or an early lunch.
It starts from $20 and has 590 reviews averaging 4.69, with guests rating the hosts 4.9 and the value for money 4.6. Transport is an optional extra, priced per car of 3 to 4 people. Free cancellation runs up to 24 hours before.
Other listings fold a swing into a longer day. One customizable day combines a jungle swing with waterfalls, a rice terrace and an optional Monkey Forest visit, over 1.5 to 8 hours, from $15. A photo walk at Tegalalang adds a swing to an hour on the terraces, from $14.

Combines a swing with falls and a rice terrace.
The Payangan park allows up to 150 kg; two other swings stop at 100 kg.
Enjoy the same view from the cafe or the terraces below.
For an Instagramable holiday picture, you can try the exhilarating Ubud swing and fly up in the air with Ubud's green landscape as background.
Every swing has limits, and they differ. The Payangan park sets a weight range of 35 to 150 kg and an age range of 5 to 65, with other ages riding at their own risk. The customizable swing day and the Tegalalang photo walk both set a maximum of 100 kg for their swings.
Those limits are there because the harness and ropes are rated for them, so tell the truth at the desk. Follow the staff's instructions, keep the harness on until they unclip you, and do not swing with loose sunglasses, hats or phones in your hand unless they are strapped. If your harness feels loose, say so before you leave the platform, not after.
Ask how the equipment is checked and when the ropes were last replaced; a good operator will answer without fuss. If anything feels improvised, walk away. Pregnant travelers, people with back or heart trouble and anyone afraid of heights should skip the swing and enjoy the view from the ground.

As for how much an Ubud swing costs, the listings here start from $14 for a photo walk with a swing, $15 for the customizable swing day and $20 for the swing park visit. What you get for the money differs widely, so compare the inclusions, not just the starting price.
Check whether the swing ride itself is included or charged extra on the day, how many rides you get, whether photos are part of the deal, and whether transport is included. At the park on this page, transport is an optional add-on per car. A clear answer to each of those questions is the best sign of a well-run park.
Small extras add up: a dress rental for photos, drinks at the cafe, a print of your picture. None of them is necessary. If the photo is the point, the staff can take it with your own phone, and that costs nothing beyond the ride.
There is no single best swing in Ubud; there is the one that fits your day. If you want terraces in the background, choose a swing above a rice valley, such as the park in Payangan or a swing near Tegalalang. If you want deep jungle, choose one on the edge of a river gorge.
If you want more than one ride, a park with a zipline and a sky bike gives you a morning of activity rather than a single photo. If you only want the picture, the cheaper option on a terrace walk is enough, and you keep the rest of the day free. One good swing is often enough; the rest of the morning can go to the terraces.
At the entrance to the Tegallalang terraces there is also a small swing with a LOVE BALI sign; Indonesia Travel advises bringing cash, as local children look after the sign.2 It is the most casual swing around, a quick photo on the way down to the paddies.
Several day tours add a swing to the classic sights. One private day through town includes 30 minutes at a jungle swing between the palace and the Tegallalang terraces. A half day from the Monkey Forest goes on to Tegalalang and an hour at Kumulilir, where the swing is.
If you want the best of Ubud tour with a jungle swing included, read the listing carefully: some include the swing ride, some only stop at a park where you pay on the spot, and some offer it as an option. Ask before you book which one yours is.
The private waterfall tour on this site does not include a swing; it spends the day on the terraces, the water temple and three waterfalls. If you want both, book a short swing visit on another morning, or ask your driver-guide whether a stop fits into your option. A driver for hire can also fit a short stop into a longer day if you plan it in advance.
Skip the swing if heights frighten you, if you are over the weight limit, or if you have a back, neck or heart problem. Skip it too if you are traveling on a tight schedule: the queues at popular parks can take longer than the ride. None of that makes the swings bad; it just makes them a choice rather than a must.
Skip it if you are after quiet. Swing parks are busy, social places, with music, photographers and a steady stream of visitors. The terraces below them, walked early in the morning, give you the same landscape with nobody waiting behind you. Early mornings are calmer everywhere, swings included.
And skip it without regret if the photo does not matter to you. The view over the palms is the same from the cafe terrace next to the swing, and a coconut there costs far less than a ride.
